President Obama commuted the sentences of 46 inmates who were in prison for non-violent, drug-related offenses. It is estimated that the number of prisoners released for these offenses will be as high as 46,000 if new sentencing mandates are put in place. If this occurs and congress passes the Smarter Sentencing Act which is a bipartisan bill that will shorten federal drug sentences and eliminate the current mandatory minimums for many drug offenses, the prison population will be dramatically different, and numbers smaller.
